ITALY LIABLE TO COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP

(Rec. 9.10) WASHINGTON, May 18. There is a very real possibility that Italy might be dominated by a Communist dictatorship within the next few months.

This declaration is made by Sumner Welles, the former United States Under-Secretary of State. To-night, in a broadcast, Mr Sumner Welles urged that the United Statse shall give immediate economic aid to Italy.

He added: To aid Greece and Turkey and yet 'to fail to help Italy to fight the same Communist threat, would jeopardise the success of the programme to prevent Soviet expansion.

He said that the negotiations for an Export-Import Bank loan of one hundred million dollars to Italy should be concluded immediately. At least 120 million dollars of the funds that are appropriated for foreign relief should also be allovated to Italy.
