Higher Prices For Imported Tobacco

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Imported cigarette and pipe tobaccos landed in New Zealand after April 30 will cost the merchants, and in consequence the public, more than the present ruling prices. This development results from the Government’s decision, notified to Christchurch wholesale merchants and importers to-day, that the subsidies on such tobabcos were withdrawn from April 30. The subsidies, which standardised the price of imported tobaccos at 3s 9d for two ounces, must mean an increase in the retail prices.
