Chinese Suspected Of Smuggling Cigarettes to Sydney

’ SYDNEY, May 1. The seizure of thirty-six bags of contraband cigarettes on the liner Taiping has led to the suspicion that the smuggling of goods l into Australia is being directed in the East by Chinese gangs. Customs officials found that the bags contained 214,200 cigarettes, constituting one of tho biggest seizures ever made in a ship in Sydney. The bags contained five well-known brands of American cigarettes. They were concealed in a hold, and insulation pipes l had to be removed before they could be released.
