Opposition Complains of High Rate of Expenditure

(Rec. 9.50.) LONDON, April 16. The Times Parliamentary correspondent says: The net result of the Budget proposals is that taxation in a full year will be increased by fifty-three million sterling. Govern-ment-supporters appeared to be, on the whole, well satisfied with the Chancellor’s speech, but the Opposition members criticised it as not providing hoped-for incentives to industry and production. Specific Opposition criticisms were, firstly, that the Chancellor had Budgeted for a needlessly high surplus of 270 millions sterling; secondly, that a net increase in taxation at this interval after the end of the war is discouraging; thirdly, that the Government appear to be stabilising expenditure at an unreasonably high level. Disappointment is also expressed that no reduction has been made in the standard rate of income tax. The Opposition’s considered criticisms will be given by Sir John Anderson in his speech to-day. SINGLE. MAN’S TAXES. (Rec. 10.10) LONDON. April 16. ■ Dr Dalton said that the effect of the income tax concessions on the single man would be that he would pay no tax until earnings reached fifty-two shillings weekly. He would not pay the full standard rate until his earnings exceeding 110 s weekly.
