Canterbury Strikers To-day Discussing Minister’s Offer

CHRISTCHURCH, March 23.

Yesterday, freezing workers rep'orted for duty at the Islington works to complete essential work held over, but they still continued with the goslow policy which they initiated on Friday afternoon. Except for Kaiapoi and Smithfield, 1500 men stopped on Friday. Tomorrow the men will discuss an offer by the Minister of Labour (Hon. A. McLagan) to set up a disputes' committee, on the condition that all parties first agree to abide by the decision of the committe.

P.A. AUCKLAND, March 23. Sections of the workers at the Westfield Freezing Company’s works, and at the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s works at Southdown walked out on Friday.

Meetings' of the men affected at both companies will be held to-mor-row.

Workers on mutton and lamb left their jobs at .Southdown after a dispute over payment of waiting time incurred while another section held a stop-work meeting. It is understood that only the beef section is involved at the Westfield work’s, but neither the company nor the Union would make comment on the situation.

The Otahuhu works of R. and W. Hellaby, Limited, will be idle to-mor-row, when the workers will take one of their two holidays allowed yearly without pay.
