WHY MARATHON?

“Marathon” is the name of a small town in Greece where a small but gallant Greek army defeated a vastly superior Persian army in 490 B.C. A youth named Fheidippides carried news of the victory to Athens—a distance of 26 miles 385 yards—after which he collapsed and died. A large mound 50 feet high still exists at Marathon.
