Borough Subsidies Suggested for Sports Ground Improvements

Application for permission to construct a banked cycling track at McLean Park was made to the Greymouth Borough Council by the Greymouth Cycling Club at Thursday’s meeting. The club advise 1 that it had Ihe support of the Advance Blaketown League in the matter, and also solicited financial assistance in forming the hanked ends or the track.

Cr J E. Stokes stated that the cLu was prepared to find about £2OO towards the cost of the work, and to supply some labour lie had con ferrod wi' h the borough f ngineer (Mr A. J. Fair-maid) on the matter, who had estimated the cost of the work at alxut £BOO. He was prepared to do all he could to ass.st the ivcling people, but considered that the scheme was too large an undertaking for the Reserves Committee. He suggested that a conference of sports body representatives and council members be held. It may be possible to develop some scheme whereby assistance could be given by means of £1 for £1 subsidy. After some discussion it was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of Cr Stokes, as chairman of the Reserves Committee, to confer further with the club.
