Shortage of Water For Domestic Use In Grey District

Representatives of tne Dobson and Wallsend Miners’ Unions waitcu on the Hon. R>. Semple and Hon. J. O’Brien on Wednesday evening, pointing out that the supply of water they were receiving for domestic use was from the Grey River, and was unfit for human consumption. Mr O’Brien undertook to get in touch with the Minister' of Mines (Hon. A. McLagan), and representatives of the Mines, Department and the Public Works Department locally, and to see what could be done after discussions with Mr J. Hadcroft and Mr Evans. A better supply was promised. Yesterday Mr J. Craig, representing the sawmill workers of the Nelson Creek district, interviewed Mr O’Brien, stating that sawmill workers were unable to keep at their work if they had to carry water in buckets from Nelson Creek to theii homes each day. Communicating with Mr Collet, of the State Forest Department, Hokitika, and with the Public Works Department, Mr O’Brien arranged to have water delivered to the Nelson Creek people. The Minister also arranged for a truck with a trailer pump to be brought from Christchurch to supply water to workers’ homes, but in view of the welcome rain yesterday, tliis will not now be necessary.
