Mr G. Gillespie, who has been officer-in-command of the No. 36 Squadron (Greymouth), of the A;T.C„ with the rank of flying officer, for the past three years, has relinquished his position.

The London Gazette announces that Prince Phillip, of Greece and Denmark, has been granted British naturalisation under the name of Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten. His engagement to Princess Elizabeth was predicted some time ago, but this was officially denied.

Mr. R. Picot, former Commissioner of Supply, returned by flying boat after a visit to India to investigate the supply of jute bags for wool packs. His trip was made at the request of the Government, and . he will make a report for the authorities when he returns to Wellington.

Mr M. Keith, of the design staff of the State Mines Department, Dunollie, has been appointed assistantengineer to the Rimu Gold Dredging Coy. He was bidden farewell by members of the State Mines staff, and was presented with a book and an envelope of notes. The presentation was made by Mr H. Hutchinson.

The Public Service Commission has appointed Mr B. F. Waters to be permanent head of the Social Security Department, chairman of the Social Security Commission, and secretary for war pensions. Born in Carterton, he joined the Pensions Department in 1913. In 1939 he was appointed assistant director of the Social Security Department, and director in 1941.

The death of a former Ruru resident, Mrs Caroline Pope, occurred at Greytown recently. She was 81 years of age. Besides her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Mesdarnes Picard (Martinborough), Barton (Nelson), Hiscox (Masterton), Birchfield (Haupiri), and A. Robinson (Rotomanu), and four sons, Messrs J. Pope (Lower Hutt), W: and P. Pope (Greytown), and A. Pope (Seddon). There,are 57 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren.
