BRITISH MINERS GIVE PLEDGE TO KEEP UP OUTPUT

LONDON, March 18. The executive of the National Union of Mine workers visited No. 10 Downing street and gave a pledge to the Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, that the five-day week in the coalmines, which has been granted from May 1, would mean no reduction of output. The president, Mr Will Lawther, and the general secretary, MiArt hur Horner, that there must be an -increase of manpower in the pits, though the pledge that the output would be maintained was not contingent on any increase in miners. The Prime Minister emphasised the necessity of building up stocks to at least' 15,000,000 tons before next winter. He indicated the steps the Government is taking to provide mining equipment transport and houses to overcome a shortage which is preventing the miners from returning and additional consumer goods and certain foodstuffs to mining areas.
