GENERAL CABLES

SEARCH FOR TREASURE IN GERMANY FRANKFURT, Feb. 18. “Operation Sparkler,” which is the name of the search in the British and American zones for precious gems and metal looted from occupied countries which the Nazi Government had hidden, brought in diamonds, gold, silver and platinum valued at £1,826,250. The Nazis- had distributed the loot to 373 places, including banks and business houses and also under floorboards and plastered into walls. The German police aided the British and American investigators in the search. Well-informed sources disclose that the British Government, to _ cut down the occupation costs, will speed the repatriation or emigration from the British zone in Germany of displaced persons who wish to leave, and direct the rest to productive labour on the same basis as Germans, says Reuter’s Herford correspondent. This decision means the virtual end of the displaced persons’ status in the zone, which now contains 270,000 displaced persons. Doctor Percy Treite, who has been condemned to death lor activities at the Ravensbruck women’s concentration camp, is writing a treatise on his research in the diagnosis of gynaecological cancer. He hopes to finish the treatise before he goes to the gallows. The Judge Advocate described Dr Treite during the trial as a doctor with a European reputation. Dr. Treite is appealing against his conviction and sentence. If the appeal fails, the execution is expected in two months’ time. NEW YORK, Feb. 16.
