The ancient University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, one of the architectural beauties of Oxford, was damaged by fire which broke out in the chancel. Firemen . after three hours prevented the fire spreading. German prisoners assisted in the removal of valuable furniture and vestments l . The church, which was built in the thirteenth century, has the most heavily decorated spire in Europe.
