LONDON, Sept. 11. A Liberal, Sir Ernest Simon, ' announced that he has joined the Labour Party because he believed that the two-party system was the best and only way of working British democracy successfully. Two minesweepers have arrived at Portsmouth from the Tenth Flotilla which has been sweeping the Pacific and reported that the Japanese had laid- a number of wooden dummy mines to make minefields look larger. The flotilla’s job is nearly finished The Nuffield Foundation, which has already created fellowships and scholarships for medicine and dentistry, announced that it has inaugurated one fellowship and two scholarship schemes designed to advance research, teaching and training in extraction in metallurgy. The foundation is offering, firstly, five travelling fellowships yearly for members of the teaching staffs of universities and schools of mines throughout the Empire, valued at £5OO sterling each, for three months, enabling teachers to visit important Empire mining and metallurgical centres during the long vacations; secondly, five travelling postgraduate scholarships yearly, valued at a maximum of £5OOO sterling for six months to be awarded for personality and for general, suitability in addition to examination merit; thirdly, 10 scholarships for students before graduating of £2OO sterling each, to enable them to travel by air for vacation work at important study centres. The Institution of Mining Metallurgy will assist the foundation to operate the scheme.
