ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Acclimatisation. Society was held on Wednesday evening ■ in the Old Boys’ Rooms. Present were Messrs G. F. Poole (chairman), M. R. Bunt (secretary), H. Silcock, J. Fleming, G. Smith, H. Roberts, H. Hill, J. Ramsay senr., A. Dalzell, B. Tindale, J. Ramsay jnr., J. Hibbs, M. Ellery, W. Berry, T. Keating, and W. Mitchell.

Dr. Falla, of Christchurch, wrote to the effect that quail and pheasants were not suitable for acclimatisation in Westland, needing a dry climate, and he instead suggested importing grey duck and water fowl. The secretary was instructed to write to .the Department of Internal Affairs, regarding the importation of black swan from Canterbury. It was- decided to apply for a three months shooting season next year, with the same limit on birds as in previous season, with the exception of pukekos, asking that these could be destroyed in unlimited quantities. The President reported on the possibility of canning eels for exportation. At the end of the whitebait reason the Hokitika whitebait factory could be possibly used. Advice from Irvine and Co., Ltd., Dunedin, owners of the ‘ factory at Hokitika, stated that at present they were working on an experiment basis, but would look into the suitability of such a proposal. Mr J. Osmers was elected to the committee, through the vacancy due to one of the members not regularly attending. Accounts totalling £3 were passed for payment.
