RUNANGA NOTES

PRESENTATION BALL. (Our Own Correspondent). The Presentation Ball, conducted by the Runanga Rugby League Club, in the Miners’ Hall last Friday evening was an outstanding success, fully one hundred and fifty couples dancing to the music of the “De Luxe” orchestra. During the evening, the president of the club, Mr. Lance Hunter, presented Corporal T. Anderson (lately returned from the Middle East and J Occupational Force) with a signet ring and a cigarette case, on behalf of fellow members of the club. Corporal Anderson suitably replied. Occasion Was also taken by Messrs L. Hunter and J. Quinn to present the West Coast members of the South Island Rugby League team, with engraved tie-pins. .Mr. J. Newton responded on behalf of his team mates. The tug-o’-war competition was won by a Te Kinga team and this event proved a novel and exciting interlude to the evening’s entertainment. An excellent supper was provided by the Ladies’ Committee and special praise is due to them for the artistic setting of the supper tables and the gracious manner in which they carried out their arduous tasks. Blood Donor Service. The public meeting, called for this evening in connection with the formation of a voluntary blood transfusion service in Greymouth and the surrounding districts, calls for meritorious praise to the convenors. The application of such a beneficial service to the community as a whole, deserves full Support from all sections and, in particular, the mining townships, where mother earth demands a heavy toll in accidents, as a sacrifice for rending her bowels in quest of her precious minerals. During the years of World War 2, medical science advanced the scheme to near perfection and too much praise cannot be bestowed on all those responsible for its application, and the undoubted success achieved, very often, under the most trying and and the worst possible conditions. It is interesting to record here that the Runanga-Dunollie members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, instituted a blood-donor service several years ago under the direction of the local doctor and that in quiet a few instances such a service has been made applicable, through the customary channels. No doubt, the outcome of this evening’s meeting, will be the nucleus of a permanent blood-donor service covering the whole community and it is assumed, and appreciated, that . the conduct and well-being of such a service should be the responsibility of. the Greymouth Public Hospital, where all appliances necessary, must be made available to the staff. May we suggest, as a conclusion, that when the scheme becomes operative and all data necessary is obtained, resident doctors be supplied with a roster embracing all particulars of the donors in their own locality. We feel, that quicker contacts could be made in every instance, under such a suggestion. Buffs v. Druids. Owing to the bad state of the ground, the friendly benefit Rugby League match set down for Saturday afternoon at the Runanga Domain, between the Buffs and the Diuids for the McPhee Challenge Shield was postponed until a later date.
