WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KUMARA MEETING At the August meeting of Kumara WomenT Institute on Wednesday evening, apologies were received from Mesdames A. Caithness, D. Lawson, and F. Stratford. The president, Mrs J. Gibson, read extracts of letters received from a New Zealand lady visiting Moscow and other Europaen cities. Mrs A. Birss gave the Golden Thread talk. The birthday was fixed for September 5. Competitions resulted: Babies’ feeders (to be sent to Westland Hospital): Mrs J. Pool 1, Mrs A. Caithness 2, Mrs Evenden 3. Best bloom; Mrs Evenden 1, Mrs Birss S, Mrs Reedy 3. Mi- Hall, of the W.E.A., gave a talk on modern drama. He suggested that any interested' form an adult education group in Kumara. Supper was served' by the hostesses, Mesdames Comport and Collie. BRUNNER INSTITUTE There was a good attendance at the August meeting of the above, Mrs Gutberlet presiding. Mrs Warren (delegate) read a comprehensive report on the Dominion conference. Mrs Hill gave a demonstration on crochet work and felt neck-wear novelties. Her competition was won by Miss Jean Warren. A competition for the sultana cake made from dripping was won by Mro Gutberlet and Mrs Rodgers, and one for a flour bag article was won by Mrs Wootton, with Mrs Todd second. Mrs Gutberlet won the wandering shilling. Mesdames' Loubere, Wilson and Magon served a dainty supper, and the evening closed with “'God Defend New Zealand”. STILLWATER INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the Stillwater Women’s Institute was held in the Stillwater Hall, Mrs Cooke presiding over a good attendance. Seven visitors were welcomed. Invitations were received from Reefton, Greymouth, and Runanga Institutes to attend their birthday parties. Mr D. O. W. Hall, M.A., gave a travel talk on France. The roll call was, “An old photo of self”, and caused quite a lot of amusement. The competition (an article made from a yard of cotton material) resulted: Mrs' Cooke 1, Mrs Johnston 2. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs Cooke. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Peters and Roberts 1 . Mrs Cooke conducted a novel competition, “Naming our neighbours”, and Mrs Johnston was the winner.

Grey Townswomen’s Guild The monthly meeting of the Grey Townswomen’s Guild was held on Wednesday. There was an attendance of 27 members. Mrs Pearson presided. Wellington branch of the British Sailors’ Society wrote asking for help in connection with a street appeal on September 20. It was decided to conduct the appeal for this worthy cause, several members giving their names as collectors. The need of a suitable room for the use of the organisation was discussed and it was unanimously decided to write to the Borough Council asking if such a room would be made available in the Town Hall when alterations were carried out. The quarterly pamphlet was to hand, containing Greymouth’s first report. A competition throughout New Zealand was held for these reports and Greymouth was placed first, with Marewa (Hawke’s Bay) second, and Hastings third. A donation towards the club’s funds, together with good wishes for its future was received from Mrs Kitchnham, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

A number of remits from the National Council of Women were discussed and voted on. Reports from the hospital visiting committee were received. Mesdames Joyce, Roud. Crowe and Stewart, were appointed to visit the hospital for the coming month. The convenor of the Gardening Circle reported on the month’s activities, stating that new members would be welcome at the meeting which takes place on September 3 at the residence of Mrs Roud, Leith Crescent. This circle had a display of posy bowls, eight in number, which added to the brightness of the room. The first prize went-to Mrs Shallcrass with Mesdames Bohmann and S. McKay second equal. During the month members and their friends made eight knitted cot covers for the Galway Guild. During the afternoon Mrs Thomas delighted members with two solos, Mrs Evans accompanying her. After afternoon tea Mrs Andrae gave a talk on France, • which proved most instructive, and was enjoyed bv all. Next month Sister Rae will speak on her overseas experiences.

BRUNNER WOMEN’S GUILD

Mrs Morris presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Brunner Women’s Guild in the R.S.A. rooms. 'The first part of the meeting was devoted to card and domino tournaments, the former being won by Mrs W. McPhie and the latter by Mrs McSorley. A debate .by Mrs Leaker (affirmative) and Mrs Jackson (negative) on the subject, “There is no harm in smoking,” was well received. Mesdames Bell and Morris were appointed delegates to a meeting at Waiuta where an attempt is being made to form a branch of the Guild. It-was decided to purchase a piano on offer to the Guild, providing that the representatives’ report was favourable. A doll dressing competition was won by Mrs A. McPhee.
