Lack of Storage Space

HARBOUR COMMITTEE’S CONCERN. At the monthly meeting of the Westport Harbour Advisory Committee, on Wednesday, concern was expressed at the decision made by the Railway Department in not providing additional storing space for timber to be shipped from Westport. Mr. J. Ward stated that he had seen so much timber stacked that the limit of the storage space was severely taxed, and was placed so high, that it required a lot of handling. It was stated by Mr. Parfitt that the provision of additional storage space was of vital importance. At the suggestion of Mr. Bascand, it was decided that Messrs C. F. Schaddick, Trevella, and Parfitt, be appointed a sub-committee to enquire into the matter, and to make further representation to the Minister of Railways (Hon. R. Semple). A report on recommendations by a special committee on the report by Captain Barker (formerly of the Westport harbour staff) on possible improvements to harbour equipment at Westport, was reviewed by Mr Bascand, who stated that arrangements had been proceeding to link up the signal station with the telephone exchange. Some action could be taken to provide a visual indicator at the lower wharf office to check automatic tide records. It was considered that, in view of the infrequent black-outs in the electrical system, an elaborate generating plant was not justified. The report was adopted with the suggestion that the recommendation concerning improved lighting .be referred to the Nautical engineer of the Department for his information and advice.
