KUMARA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent!. A large attendance of sportsmen assembled at the Fire Brigade social hall on Saturday evening last on the occasion of the formal farewell accorded to two very prominent and respected citizens, Messrs Robert Milne and Stewart Rizzi, both of whom have been closely associated with sporting and social activities in the town for many years. Mr Pearse Gilbert, president of the League Football Club, presided. He said that he was pleased to see such a representative gathering to honour two of the community’s fellows. Then followed the Loyal Toast, after which Mi- R. James proposed “The Borough Council,” responded to by Crs. W. Lawrence and F. Rudkin. “Kindred Sports” was proposed by Mr W. Rochford, and was replied to by Messrs R. James (cricket), W. Bell (League football), R. Stark (racing), G. McEnaney (Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade), W. Lawrence (Rugby O. Tomasi (bowls) and R. Anichich (tennis). Mi 1 Gilbert said that it was his particular honour and pleasure to make presentations to the departing members on behalf of the manv members who had made subscriptions, and in presenting Mr Milne with a wristlet watch and Mr Rizzi with a wallet of notes, referred to the lengthy association the guests had had with the town’s affairs. He felt that they would always have fresh and pleasant memories .of friends at Kumara and that perhaps they would wander back again. Mr Gilbert’s remarks were supplemented by Messrs C. Wright, P. Sinclair, J. Calder and N. Clark. Messrs Milne and Rizzi replied briefly and recalled the happy and enjoyable times they had spent in Kumara. The evening was pleasantly concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Miss Jessie Reedy last week for Wellington, where she. has accepted a position. Miss Dulcie May, of Christchurch, is visiting friends in Kumara. Mr Frank Richardson who has been called to an Air Force training course will leave for Christchurch by today’s express. Mr and Mrs Nesbit, of Nelson, were visitors to Kumara last week. Mr M. Mennell was a visitor after several years’ absence, last week. After many years without Rugby being played at Kumara, the Graham Wise Cup will be played for to-day between the winners of the junior grades at Hokitika and Greymouth.
