Mrs Hoffman, of Invercargill, is visiting her brother, Mr J. Ramsay, of Gladstone Siding. At a meeting of Nationalist Party members at Otalci, to make a selection from nine nominees, Mr James J. Maher was chosen as Nationalist candidate for Otaki. The Rev. Robert Chisholm, M.A., B.D. of Scotland, was chosen as Nev/ Zealand secretary of the British’ and Foreign Bible Society at a meeting of the Dominion Council jn Wellington on Tuesday evening. He will succeed the Rev. David Calder who will retire in December. Mr. Chisholm is general secretary to the National Bible Society of Scotland. Tiie funeral took place at Refton suburban cemetery of Mr Ihoma Rea. Requiem Mass was celebrate at the Church of the/Sacred Heart, Reefton, Rev. Father Kirby conducting the services at the Church and the graveside. There was a large attendance (of friends ana' r eiauves from Ross to Westport, including 10 nephews, four of whom acted as pallbearers. Many floral tributes were laid off the grave, tribute to the esteem ’ in which the late Mr Rea was held in the cummunity.

Messrs G. S. Bogle and J. M. Ziman have been nominated by Victoiia University College for the .1947 Rhodes Scholarships. Mr Bogle, aged 22, is the son of Mr and Mrs A. H. Bogle, formerly of Wanganui. He was awarded a Senior University Scholarship and gained the Bachelor of Science degree in 1944. He has taken an active part in University sports. Mr Ziman’s parents live in England. Mr A. Warwick, of Dunollie, who has retired from the position of weighman at the Liverpool State mine, after many years’ service, was met recently by members of the staff of the State Coal Mines Office at Dunollie, where on behalf of those present, the Chief Clerk, Mr W. Coumbe, presented Mr Warwick witn a fountain pen, a propelling pencil and a wallet. Mr Warwick, who is originally of North Auckland, was one of the earliest contributors to the “Argus” and is a well-known personality on the Coast. He is at present a resident of Dunollie.
