After requests for permission had been refused by the Waterfront Control Commission, waterside workers who were discharging southern produce cargo from the vessel “Waiana” left the ship at three o’clock this afternoon to attend the Rugby League match between England and Auckland at Carlaw Park. The ship was left idle until six o’clock, when the men returned to work the evening ' shift. About 130 men were involved. Although the request was made by the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union for leave for all of its members to see the game, only those men <m the "Waiana” left their work. A separate request from the "Waiana’s” men was also declined.
