ATTACKS ON NEGROES
ALABAMA YOUTHS ARRESTED NEW YORK, August 11. Nine persons,' eight of whom aie of ’teen age, are in gaol in Athens, Alabama, charged’ with unlawful assembly as the result of race rioting yesterday which followed the atrest of two white soldiers after a fight with a negro. County judge Rosenau said the youngest accused, aged 13, carried a club and knocked down negroes. Pie also revealed that a crowd of more than 2000 forced the Mayor to release two whites from gaol and' then, incited by hoodlums, began to clear the streets of negroes. The town is now quiet and safe, State Guardsmen remain on the alert. Athens is a farming centre with a population of about ,6,000, 25 per cent, of whom are negroes.
