A party of boys from the Marist Brothers School, Greymouth, left on the railcar last evening to take part in a secondary schools’ elocution competition in Christchurch.

The Social Club of the Grey Electric Power Board staff held a social evening last evening at which they entertained members of the board and officially welcomed home those members of the staff who had’ been on service in the forces.

Rimu Dredging Co., Ltd., for the clean-up period, from May 29 to June 11, recovered 341.5 ounces of bullion from 79,534 yards in 2341 hours.

The higest average price for West Coast fat cattle at this week’s Addington market wgs £23 11s 3d for a line of seven steers from McDonald Bros., Totara Fiat. The prices ranged from £2l 17s 6d to £24 7s 6d. Another good line of five steers from F. Wall, Harihari, brought £2l 12s 6d to £23 2s 6d.

The British Government has agreed to contribute £lO,OOO towards the cost of setting up a station to conduct special investigations in New Zealand into meteorological conditions as they affect radio and radar communications at high frequencies. These investigations are expected to have important results on the use of radar, radio direction and self-pro-pelled missiles. Six Biitish experts will be sent to this country to assist in the investigations. Four Anson aircraft of the R.N.Z.A.F. and a Castle class minesweeper, lent To the New Zealand Navy will 'be attached to the station and special scientific equipment is being dispatched from Britain and America to assist in the work. The aircraft and minesweeper used in connection with the experiments will be specially fitted for the purpose of the tests and a series of fixed meterological stations will be set up both on the West Coast and in Canterbury to cooperate in the work of thy main station which located at Ashburton.
