The weather report stated:— Situation: There is a complex depression approaching the North Island from the Tasman Sea. 'There :s an anti-cyclone east of the South Island.
Forecast to 5 p.m. on Friday: Light to moderate easterly to northeasterly winds. Weather continuing fine in the south, but cloudy elsewhere, with scattered rain developing north of Westport. Temperatures cold.
