COUNCIL COMMITTEES’ REPORTS The following reports of Committees of the Westport Borough Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening were adopted as resolutions:-— General Purposes Committee:— • Sanitary and Building Inspection: That this Council together with the Buller County Council, retain solely the services of the Sanitary and Building Inspector as from February 15, 1946. Both Councils to pay equal shares of the extra salary involved, and to pay a mileage allowance as well as car expenses as previously. That the Buller Engineering Company be advised that this Council is prepared to sell its .steam roller for the sum of £450. That the only tender received' for plastering the front of the Town Hall being that of Mr P. Sannazzaro be accepted. Works and Waterworks Committee;—That the 'price of the steam roller be definitely fixed at £5OO and that firms interested be notified accordingly. That the question of the formation ol a footpath on the west side-of Queen Street between Stafford and Roebuck Street be again discussed when some of the more important works have been completed, and that I in the meantime the footpath on the ■ east side of Queen Street be cleaned. That the footpath and flank of the street in front of the Waterfront Control Commission building be tarsealed and a concrete kerb put in. That Inspector Knight be directed to notify all owners of property where hedges have overgrown and also owners of vacant sections where the overgrowth has spread on to formed footpaths, that unless clearances are made within a specified time, legal action may be taken. That it be a recommendation to the Gas Commit- ■ tee to restrict the sale of tar, which is urgently needed for sealing work, ; and to purchase a quantity of colas in the meantime. Gas and Electrical Committee:—-1 i That the Hospital Board be advised < that the pole in front of Dr. Nanson’s residence will be moved provided that. 1 its removal in either direction does not conflict with the regulations, and ( that all charges are paid by the Board; Messrs Tally and Thompson to ; be advised on the same lines, all works to be carried out at a time convenient ; to the Council. That the Buller En- ( gineering Company be advised that the Council is not disposing of its \ Electrical Fittings Department. The Committee made a tour of inspection of the Gasworks and submitted the following recommendations: (a) That the action of the Chairman and Town Clerk in making temporary arrange ments for the managing of the works f during, Mr McNally’s absence, be en- £ dorsed. (b) That the Gas Manager c be given leave to attend a conference of the Gas Institute on the usual con- s ditions. (c) That the Gas Manager | be authorised to arrange immediately 1 for the re-setting of the bed of re- J torts now out of use and that one bed c be set every year till the remaining s three are completed. Resignation: > c All members of the Committee and I the Town Clerk and Electrical Engineer expressed appreciation of Cr. f Howard’s work during his term as b Chairman of the Committee. r Abattoir and Baths Committee:— r That the action of the Chairman and l the Town Clerk in granting the use n of the baths to the Westport Swimming Club for championships all day on Saturday. February 9, be endorsed. That the offer to remove offal from tne abattoir at an annual charge be held over till next Committee meeting. 0

Reserves Committee: —A deputation from the Buller Cricket Association consisting of Messrs R. Ward, J. MacDonald, O. C. Morris and F. Cunningham, waited on the Committee regarding this matter and after discussion it was resolved that for ..he remainder of the cricket season play in representative matches only be allowed on Victoria Square on Sunday between the hours of 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Cr. C. H. Thomas (Council representative on the Fire Board) reported on a meeting of the Board and Fire Brigade with Mr Girling Butcher, Chief Inspector of Fire Brigades, held on January 19, 1946: —“The following is a short report on matters affecting the Westport Borough Council (which may come in under the new regime): If the Borough Council was not satisfied with the way the Brigade was being handled or service given, it has the right to take Ihe matter up with the Controlling Authority, and if no satisfaction was obtained, then bring (he matter to the notice of the Central Council through the Local Authority representative on the Central Council. Mr Girling Butcher think.-: that the Board was within its rights in sounding the siren daily, but it should be sounded at a suitable time.

BIRCHFIELD NOTES (Our Buller Correspondent) The third round of the euchre tournament was held on Tuesday evening, the winners being S. V allis and P.’ Carey. . . Mr. and Mrs. C. Jack left for Christchurch on a fortnight’s visit. Mr. Alex Cumming has arrived back from Timaru. The Birchfield School is holding its annual picnic on Saturday, at Mr. Cowan’s paddock.
