OCCUPATION OF JAPAN
For How Long ? TOKIO, January 30. “I believe the occupation of Japan should last at least 20 years,” said Lieut.-Colonel Moore Cosgrave, chiei Canadian delegate to the Far Eastern Commission, after a three weeks’ survey of Japan. “If we pull out before then we will have a little Balkans. Mr Thomas Confessor, chief Philippines delegate, suggested 10 military occupation, followed by 10 years’ civil occupation, headed by a group such as the Far Eastern Commission.
U.S.A. Plans END OF MILITARY OCCUPATION AFTER THREE YEARS. (Rec. 11.50) NEW YORK. Jan. 31. Major-General McCoy has announced that the Far East Commission completed a three days survey of the Allied occupation of Japan. They are sailing for the United States on February 1. A New York “Herald-Tribune correspondent at Tokio says: General McCoy, carefully avoiding either praise or censure, said the commission were now better prepared for the work ahead. Their visit _ was most valuable. The commission were impressed by General MacArthur’s leadership. One memberconsidered that the United States probably would withdraw all its troops and end the military phase of the occupation within three years. The correspondent says: This apparently leaves the way open for a civil service force of about 30.000 to replace the troops and carry on occupation. _ r, , j He adds: However, New Zealand and Australia hope for a period of 20 to 50 years of occupation. It appears that, if the United. States weakens, the world can rely on these countries to be alert watchdogs of Japan.
