N.Z. LEAD APPLAUDED

SUPPORT FOR U.N.R.R.A. (N.Z. Official News Service). LONDON, January 30

As a country which has already declared its intention, subject to Parliamentary approval, of making its second contribution to U.N.R.R.A., New Zealand was proposed to-day as a member of a Special Committee of the United Nations General Assembly which will urge other nations to contribute as soon as possible to funds that are needed to continue relief and rehabilitation work in the liberated countries.

After a debate, which extended over several days, the Committee on Economic and Financial Questions adopted unanimously a resolution, submitted by the United States delegation, which pointed out the imperative urgency of action being taken to facilitate the final stages of the work of U.N.R.R.A. It recommends, that the General Assembly should establish a Committee to consult with the States signatory to the U.N.R.R.A. agreement, and to urge them to make, without delay, an additional contribution of one per cent, of their national incomes. This Committee will also endeavour to bring into U.N.R.R.A. those countries which, although members of the United Nations, are not yet members of U.N.R.R.A. Only a handful of nations have yet signified an intention to make a further contribution to U.N.R.R.A., and New Zealand is one of them. Mr Fraser announced the Government’s decision, subject to Parliamentary approval, and the plenary meeting of the Assembly greeted it with applause.
