LONDON, Jan. 29. Mr Attlee announced in the Commons that Marshal R.A.F’. Lord Portal of Hungerford would head the organisation within the Ministery of Supply to provide missile materrial for the development of British research in atomic energy. The distinguished Professor J. D. Cockroft had been appointed DDirector of Atomic Research, and of the experimental station near Dodcot, for which Lord Portal’s organisation would supply the material as soon as possible to enable Britain to take advantage of the developments as they occurred Mr Attlee pointed out the choice of head of the supply organisation was a matter of supreme importance. The Government was fortunate to secure Lord Portal’s services. Professor Cockroft at the present is director of a Canadian atomic energy plant and would remain there temporarily until the Canadian authorities were able to appoint a successor.
