YACHTING

third’sanders cup race. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 30. The Evelyn (Otago) won the third Sanders Cup race on Lyttelton harbour this afternoon, after the most interesting contest of this series. In the first part of the race, the wind was very flukey. Auckland, Canterbury; and Otago held the lead in turn in those baffling changes of wind. Southland made a much better showing than in the previous races, and finished fourth. Otago’s win was as well deserved as it was popular. Chance may have given the Evelyn the lead early in the second round, but it was good judgment and clever seamanship which enabled her to increase the lead to win by nearly five minutes over the next boat, Canterbury. The wind had been a light, north-westerly all the morning, built died away about an hour before the start. Fifteen minutes before the start, it camo awav in a light northeasterly. All of the boats carried light weather crews, and Canterbury had changed to a lighter mainsail. The finish was as follows, the elapsed times being given:-— Evelyn (Otago) 2 hours 22 minutes 35 seconds, first. Victory (Canterbury) 2/27/30, second. Davina (Auckland) 2/28/10, third. Vorena (Southland) 2/33/0, fourth. Gallina (South Canterbury) 2/33/8, fifth. Delight (Wellington) 22/33/31. sixth.
