HOMELESS CHILDREN

ENGLAND’S CITY EVACUEES (Rec. 8.50) LONDON. Jan. 4 The “Daily Mail” says: Orphans of the great war evacuation are to be maintained by the Government. The cost of their board and lodging- as from April 1, will be a State charge. About one million children were evacuated, of whom nearly ten thousand have not returned' home owing to eithev lack of accommodation or other temporary difficulties. There are some cases where parents are separated, where one is dead, or where there is no suitable home. Fewer than one thousand cannot trace their parents. The responsibility for the long term care of the children will now rest with the authority from whose area they ar? evacuated, but first hanj supervision will be carried .out by the country or borough in whose area they are now living. The new arrangement will bridge a switch-over from a windingup of the Government evacuation scheme to new legislation replacing the Poor Law for these children
