DESTROYER DUE AT AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, January 4. Another large British destroyer is due at Auckland shortly. She is , H.M.S. Amethyst, tenth ship in the Royal Navy to have borne this name, . and she is expected in about a fortnight’s for refit at the Devonport dockyard. It is also expected that the destroyer Barfleur, which has been refitting at Devonport since early in December, will leave Auckland about the end of this month.

NEW CHESS CHAMPION CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4 T. Lepviikmann (Wellington) with an unbeaten record of eight wins and three draws won the chess championship. Born in Estonia and later residing in Holland, Lepviikmann came to New Zealand just before the war. The present was his third championship congress. He was third at Wellington in 1943-44 won by Wade, and second’ last year to Wade at Auckland. Wade finished • with a strong run to draw level with J. D. Steele (Wellington) in second place. McNabb (Wellington), like Wade, began the tourney indifferently, but a sequence of fine victories gave him excellent prospects of becoming run-ner-up, a position he previously filled in 1936-37 and 1938-39 Steele was a strong contender for the title at one stage, but felt the strain over the concluding stages. His performance for so young a player vyas excellent. Points were: Lepviikmann, 91; Wade and Steele, 85; McNabb 8 (!)• Abbott, 7; Stewart, si; Gyles, 5, Mrs. Abbott, 31; Darwin 3 (1); McGilvray, 3; Kelling, 21; Hardy 1. B S Woods (Wellington), with seven wins, three draws, and' one loss, won the major open tourney, half a point ahead of. Miss _ Hollis (Auckland), who had eight wins and three losses. Mitchell (Canterbury) was third with 71 points. Next were: Webling 7, Henderson 65, Moore o, Sim 51, Mrs. Golding 4, Godschalk, Denys, Vincent 31, Mrs. Short 11. The first-class tourney was won bv S. J. Webb (Canterbury) with eight points from Pope (Wellington) 7.
