GREY TROTS

CHINOOK WINS IN SLOW RACE Double to King High Betting was brisk on the occasion of the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s mid-summer meeting, the totalisator handling £25,7615. as compared with £20,4395 in 1945, when a one-day meeting was held. Track conditions were excellent, the going having benefited by early morning showers. There was a large attendance, and some splendid finishes were witnessed. Although the race for the Greymouth Trotting Club Handicap resolved itself into a sprint home, the finish was one of the most exciting seen on the course. As a spectacle the race was robbed of a good deal of interest by the tactics of the drivers, none of whom seemed anxious to take over the pace making, with the result that the field raced in Indian file for three and a-half circuits. Considering the nature of the going, the time, 4.41, was very slow. Results:— EXPRESS HANDICAP, of 125 furlongs:— 2/2 KANGO, Messrs R. Eden and H. Snellex’s b.g. Great Bingen— Rey de Oro, 24 yds (L. Kango and Steel Sword went into a break on the turn on the way out, but recovered along the back straight. With a half to go, it was Belle Header two lengths clear of Walter Jingle, with Kango settling down to it a length and a-half back. Four lengths away came Kango with a big gap to Contraband. In the run for home, Belle Header was still showing the way a length and a-half clear of Kango, and Walter Wingle on terms, and eight lengths back to Compris. Kango came with a great finishing run to win by a nose with Walter Jingle, also finishing fast, half a length away, third. Tote £2,104. BRUNNER HANDICAP, of 124 furlongs:— 2/3 KING HIGH, Mr C. E. In the back straight, Drury Lane improved his position, moving up to Mavis Grattan and Jackalette racing on terms behind King High, then came Task Force. With a half to go it was Dandy Grattan doing it nicely from Forecast, Atawhero and Honest Peter, with Crossroads, Wee Peg, True Potts, Surrey Park and Admiration handily placed. At the turn for home, Dandy Grattan held on from a tiring field with Forecast doing his best in second place. Then came Atawhero and True Potts behind Honest Peter on terms with Crossroads.
