DUKE OF GLOUCESTER'S AMNESTY FOR RR.ISONERS

(Rec 7 5.) CANBERRA, Oct. 5. To mark the formal surrender of Japan, the Governor-General of Australia. the Duke of Gloucester, has granted clemency towards offendeis against the laws of the Commonwealth and its territories. Mr. Chitley announced in the House of Representatives to-day that, for members of the Armed Forces, the remission will be fourteen days in thir sentences up to fifty-six days. Bor sentences in excess of three months, the remission is at the rate of fourteen days for each nriod of three months. . For civilians, the remission will bo on a basis ofi approximately one-seventh of the sentences of three months or. more.
