The grant of £375, on a id for £1 basis, had been made by the Soil Conservation and Rivers contX Replying the Council’s request for Government grants for extension of the Mason Road and a proposed bridge on the Mitchells-Hau-piri road near Inchbonnie, the Dis trict Engineer advised that it had not been possible to provide funds for these works on the current year’s estimates. The matter of a bridge over die Crooked' River, to connect Te Kinga with the Moana road was held over. The Acting-Minister of Mines, Hon J. O’Brien, forwarded a letter from Mr. C. H. Benney, Under-Sec-retary for Mines regarding finance for reconstruction and repairs of the Blackball water-race. — me engineer was authorised to take further action on the matter. An application from Mr. Witham McVicar, Totara Flat, for a transfer of his slaughterhouse license to R-. and J. Burrows, Totara Flat, was

approved. Messrs Joyce and Taylor, County Solicitors, forwarded for completion a Closing Order of a dwelling house and premises at South Beach, it was decided to complete the order. A copy of the petition concerning the proposed alterations of the boundaries of the Grey Electric Power District, which is to be forwarded to the Governor-General, was received and is available for inspection by the public until October

The secretary of the Moana Domain Board wrote asking what decision had been reached regarding an application for 31 chains of road additional in Taku Street and chains in Korua Street. The engineer was asked to inspect the site and report to the next meeting. Associated Gold Dredges (N.z.) Ltd., applied for permission to carry on mining operations on the road fronting section 41, Block VII, Mawheranui Survqy District, and between that section and Red Jacks Creek.

The engineer reported that he considered the application could be granted under the following conditions: — 1. That no mining take place on the metal road or on the road reserve; 2. That tailings may bt put on the road reserve except for a strip 50 links Wide; 3. That the company provide, a clear water-way, 2 chains wide, in Red Jacks Creek; 4. that these conditions be carried out to the satisfaction of the engineer. It was decided to grant permission subject to the engineer’s conditions. Mr. J. Mulcare Jnr., Hon. Secretary, Ngahere Branch Federated Farmers, wrote regarding the urgent need for an inspection of the Red Jacks area owing to its liability to severe flooding owing to dredging operations in the vicinity. The engineer said that there had always been trouble in that locality. There was more water in the creek since dredging operations had been carried out. He said that the council had no power to interfere except in the case of a road reserve.—lt was decided' to reply accordingly. The secretary of the New Zealand Counties’ association forwarded a legal opinion from the Association's Solicitor regarding footpaths . on State highways at Ahaura. This stated that the council’s view of the matter was correct. It was decided to applv for a £1 for £1 subsidy repair work to the footpaths at Ahaura and also for road' sealing at Blackball. Applications were granted to tne New Forest Sawmilling Co. Ltd., and Ogilvie 'and Co. Ltd., for approval of tramways crossing the old Greymouth-Reef ton road at Ngahere and the Paroa-Dunganvlile road’ at Dunganville, respectively. The payment of accounts amounting to £4,665 7s 9d was approved. The engineer reported that information had been received that two persons had been digging and removing soil and gravel from the road near Gladstone and that one of the persons had been a contractor who had subsequently sold this material. —It was left to the Engineer to use his own discretion in dealing with the matter. The matter of taking stringers from a bridge which was no longer being used, and using them °n other bridges was left to the engineer with power to act. Applications for assistance in the matter of river erosion were received from Messrs. Walker, Banytown; Stewart and' Langbridge, Canoe Creek and A. Stewart, Cape terrace, Teremakau. —The engineer was ’renuested to inspect and report on these matters. Concern at the lack of interest in the Local Bodies Conference was voiced by Cr. Mulcare who said tnat compared with the North island, the South Island had been slipping badly over the last few years. He asked the council to re-consider the matter. Cr. Mulcare was appointed to represent the Grey County _ Council in conjunction with the Grey Power Board. By unanimous agreement. it was decided to rescind the previous motion that no action be taken in the matter.
