ENGINEERING RESEARCH
STATION PROPOSED FOR GREYMOUTH The suggestion that a central engineering research station be established at Greymouth, was maue oy Mr. J. B. Kent at the meeting c* th£ Westland Regional Planning Council fast evening. The station could try out all engineering problems o- the district. It would co-operate with the Department of Scientific and industrial Research. It would be available to any local authority such as Harbour Boards, Catchment Boards, and Borough Councils. It should be possible to finalise the enterprise by means of a small levy on ail those bodies which would use it. He suggested Greymouth as the site, because hero, thanks to the Harbour Board Engineer, Mr. D. S. Kennedy, there was already the nucleus or such a station. All the machines and gauges necessary for measuring and controlling flow of water were here in Greymouth, and most of them had been made here.
He recommended that the council approach the Government to nave such a station established In Greymouth. It might even be a central research station for all the South Island.
Mr. F. A. Kitchingiiam supported Mr. Kent and suggested that Mr. Kennedy draw up a report of what equipment was available in Gi’eymouth and what was needed.' 'lt was decided that the Harbour Committee prepare a report of the potentiality of such a research station.
