The death of Mrs. Agnes Mawhinev aged 75, occurred at Greymouth yesterday A native of Noith Auckland she had lived for most of her life at Palmerston North. Alter nie death of her husband three years ago she came to Greymouth to live with her daughter. She leaves two sons, Gladstone (Auckland) and' Samuel (Timaru), and one daughter, Mrs. C. FI Sumpter (Cobden). The funeral will take place this morning, following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church.

Rev. Father Leo J. Spring, S.M., Chaplain to the Forces, who has been awarded the 0.8. E., (Military Division), was stationed at Reef ton a few years ago. Father Spring was a popular padre through the Desert and Italian campaigns. He is still overseas, though he returned to New Zealand temporarily some twelve months ago on a duty tour on the hospital ship “Oranje.”

A State luncheon in honour of New Zealand winners of the Victoria Cross in the 1939-45 war is to be held at Parliament House on Thursday next. Seven Victoria Crosses were awarded to New Zealand service personnel, namely: Sergeant J. A. Ward, of Wanganui, who afterwards lost his life on active service; Captain C. H. Upham, of Christchurch, who recently was awarded a bar to his Cross; Sergeant A. C. Hulme, of Richmond, Nelson; Sergeant J. D. Hinton, Colao Bay. Southland; Second Lieutenant K. Elliott of Mangamaire, Pahiatua; Second Lieutenant Moana-O-Kiwa Ngarimu, of Ruatoria, whose Cross was awarded post-humously; and Flying Officer L. A. Trigg, North Auckland, whose award was also made post-humously. Four who are living have returned to New Zealand.
