REGIONAL PLANNING

WESTLAND COMMITTEES SET UP The Mayor of Greymouth, Mr. F. A. Kitchingham, presided over a meeting of the Westland Regional Planning Council held at Greymouth last evening, also present being: Messrs W. Clayton, J. W. Mclntyre, J. B. Kent, G. D. Smart, K. O. May. E. W. Kennedy, F. E. Lockington, J. Barrow, W. Richards, and A. R. Elcock, also the secretary Mr. Hutton and Mr. W. Turner. The rules for the Council, as prepared by a sub-committee, were adopted and Mr. Kitchingham was elected as chairman of the Council. The elections for the executive of the Regional Council resulted as follows: Messrs W. Clayton, J. Barrow. J. Stokes. J. W. Mclntyre, and D. S. Kennedy. The elections for the nuclei of the special committee resulted:— Harbours; Messrs J. B. Kent (chairman), D. S. Kennedy, M. H. Houston, E. W. Kennedy, S. J. Davis and A. Panther. Farmining in all its branches: Messrs W. Clayton (chairman). D. Jellie, J. Ryan, M. Wallace and W. A. Jamieson. , Forestry: Messrs C. Biggs (chairman),'K. O. May, F. L. Turley, G. Blair, Marshall and Dr. W. McKay. Coal mining: Messrs F. E. Lockington, (chairman), J. Adamson D Barnes, Gage, C. J. Strognman, and W. Purdy. Gold and other mining (except coal) and quarrying: Messrs T. Leamont (chairman), W. J. Ellis, S. B. White, W. J. Radford, G. Lowes, D. M. Pettigrew. Secondary and other industries: Messrs J. Bluett (chairman), P. C. Peters, W. Richards. Steer, T. Blackie, R. Wylie and J. McLean. Transport, tourist and recreation: Messrs G. R. Harker (chairman), Smith, G. D. Smart, A. R. Elcock, P. E. L. Renton. J. Saunders, Graham, Sullivan. D. R. Dowell. Richardson, A. M. Jamieson and J. McNulty. Hon. D. G. Sullivan advised that authority for purchasing petrol would be available to. members for attending meetings where no other transport was .available. It was left to the various committee to meet and outline- their work. In this, Mr. Kitchingham said they would be able to get the assistance of Government Departments. It was decided that the mid-West-land district should elect a representative to the executive, and that the Hokitika Businessmen’s Association should be represented. Mr. May said that it was necessary for the committees to get going immediately’. or otherwise the whole thing would be a “wash out.” Mr. Kitchingham said the committees would meet very soon.
