SYDNEY, September 20. Steiner won the chess championship, beating M. Green in the final round. Three shared second ' place. Wade (N.Z.), Purdy, and Lazare. The final scores were: Steiner 12, Wade, Purdy and Lazare 101. Green 9, Koshnitskv 81. Goldstein and Klass each 8. Crowl, and Watson each 71, Shoebridge 61, 'Salm 51, Vauuham 5. Miller and Harris each 41, McGrath 2. Wade and Purdy met in the last round, and it was a Homeric struggle. Both players, being alive to Pie importance of the game, strained every nerve. Purdy gradually improved his position and won.
