WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] WESTPORT, Sept. 20 The Karepo sailed this morning for Auckland. Owing to trouble which developed in .the d’ynamo last night the Kartigi was delayed and will’ sail to-night fox- Auckland. The Flolmlea arrived to-day from New Plymouth' and is loading for Wanganui. Mr. M. Mikelaney, if Wellington, is visiting relatives here. W.O. J. B. Shand returned yesterday from Wellington. Constable and Mrs. H. Nelson, of Wellington left on return yesterday after spending holidays at Westport as the "guests of Sergeant T. Matthews.

Mrs. J. Lake left to-day on return to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. N. Herbert left today on return to Wellington. Mesdames S. Wingate, L. Trevella, and C. Walker and Miss E. Trelvar left yesterday for Picton. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Parkhill, of Dunedin, are visiting here. The Westport Trotting Club has had its second day’s permit restored and will race on the usual dates, December 26 and 27. The meeting this year will be held on Patterson Park, the six furlong grass track, the club having recently amalgamated with the Westport Jockey Club.

The Nelson Education Board at its monthly meeting received a tender of £5OO for the carrying out of ground improvements at Black’s Point. The tender was referred back to the committee as the architect had estimated that the work would cost only £145. Ikamatua Committee requested the installation of a septic tank and drainage system to serve both the teacher’s residence and school. It was decided to call tenders for the work. Four tenders were received for the heating installation at the new District High School, Murchison. The tender of Vale and Co., £729, was accepted. The Department advised approval of a grant of half the cost of assembly and drill area at Waimangaroa School. The chairman and secretary were asked to report on the request of Ikamatua Committee for a grant towards the cost of topdressing and fencing the additional playing area. The architect’s report on a request for improved lavatory accommodation at the infants’ classroom at Westport North School was adopted. The following grants were made towards incidental expenses: Black’s Point £l6, Denniston £25, Millerton £lO. Reefton £l6.

The board approved of the removal of Capleston school to a new site. It was decided to prepare plans and ask the Department for a grant for a residence for the Westport North School head teacher, the site to be selected by Hon. W. H. Mclntyre. Purchase of an electric range for Reefton manual training centre was authorised. Mr. J. Adamson, Little Wanganui, wrote protesting against the closing of Little Wanganui school. A proposal for the reinstatement of a school bus service for residents of Nine Mile Road has been sent to the department for approval. The resignation of Mrs. V. Collins, secondary assistant, Murchison, was accepted. Mr. George A. Bain, head teacher, Dunsandel. was appointed head teacher at Denniston District High School from 14 applicants. Miss R. M. Austin, Granity, was appointed assistant mistress at Granity District High School. The secretary reported that 1110 children were now being conveyed to school in the Nelson education district.
