WESTPORT NOTES

WESTPORT, September 19. Owing to absence of members of the crew, the Rata was. prevented from sailing last night for Ne;v Plymouth. She sailed this .morning. The Te Arqha completed repairs to her engine yesterday, and sailed this morning for Little Wanganui. The Karepo is expected to complete loading and sail for Auckland to-night. The Kartigi is expected to sail to-mor-row for Auckland. Mrs J. O’Driscoll returned lasc evening from Wellington. , Mrs J. Marshall returned from Wellington yesterday. Mrs Barnicoat, Dominion President of the Women’s Institute, is visiting the Buller district. National Savings in the Buller district for the week ended Septembei 15 were £23 short of the quota All offices, with the exception, of Westport, exceeded their weekly quota. Details were: Westport £lo4 (quota £265); Denniston £B6 (£29); GranityMillerton £7B (£51); Karamea £l7 (£13); district £335 (£3o8). Good runs of whitebait have been experienced in z the Buller and O - waiti rivers yesterday and while the smaller streams have also yielded good catches. Yesterday the price per pint paid by local retaileis was 2s 6d, but the over-the-countei sale price was ss. On the waterfront to-dav the bait were being sold at 3s a pint, and if the present run continues the price will soon be down to 2s. Fine and warm weather prevails, and a large number of fishers are taking the opportunity of making a few shillings pocket money. Union Steam Ship Company s vessels which were in port this week had their funnels painted the usual red and black of the Company, they presented a fine sight at the wharf after the painting over of the grey colour which was the colour during the war period. ~
