HOW MANY U.S.A. FORCES?
(Rec: 8.30) WASHINGTON, Sept. 19. Mr Truman said he did not know anything of General MacArthur’s statement that two hundred thousand troops would be sufficient for the occupation of Japan, until the statement had been published. He added that a reduction of the number of troops necessary for Japan might be accompanied by a similar reduction for Germany. NEW U.S. WAR SECRETARY (Rec. 8.30) WASHINGTON, Sept. 19. President Truman has announced that Judge Patterson has been appointed Secretary of the War Department, replacing Mr H. Stimson, who has resigned.
