BRUNNER NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) -Mrs. Davis, of Dobson, has left for Timaru on an extended holiday. Mrs. Meyers, Senr., has returned to Dobson after spending several months with her son in the North Island.

The monthly meeting of the Dobson Women’s Institute was held on Thursday last in the school. Mrs. Batey presiding over a very good attendance. The meeting opened with’ the institute song, Mrs. Lee read the aspirations. Mrs. Batey welcomed new members and visitors from the Brunner and Stillwater institutes. Correspondence was read and discussed. An appeal for the Makogai leper fund was read, and it was decided to send the usual donation of £1 Is. An invitation to a Bring-and-Buy at the Nurses’ Home was accepted. The agenda for the Council meeting to be held in October was read, the delegates to attend being Mrs. J. Hill, and Mrs. E. Peters. Mrs. Batey thanked all members who helped to make the recent shop day such a success, also Mrs. Johnson' for a pair of towels which brought in the handsome sum of £4, and Mrs. Lockington for her donation. It was decided to hold a bazaar for Hall funds on November 3.- ' The “wandering two shillings” was won by Mrs. W. McPhee. A travel talk by Mrs. Flill and the monthly competition had to be postponed because 'of the arival of FlightLieutenant Gordon Meagher, who recently returned from overseas service arid a period spent as a prisoner of war. With Mrs. Meagher, he was the guest of the evening. Mrs. Batey with very appropriate remarks welcomed the very popular “Bluey” and made the : usual presentation, 'also presenting shoulder sprays to Mrs. Meagher Junr., and Mrs'. Meagher Senr. and Mrs. Benny. Items were given by Mrs. Dobbin, Mrs. McPhee, Mrs. Eyeington, and by Mrs. S. Smith and her Maoris; Miss Watson was the accompanist. A very dainty supper was served by Mesdames Lee, Julian, Dunn and Eder. A very pleasant evening was brought to a close with God Defend New Zealand.

A pleasant evening was held in the R..S.A. rooms on Saturday. There was a good attendance of members and of recently returned servicemen. Mr W. Gutberlet welcomed the visitors and members, and specially referred to Flight Lieut. Meagher, who has recently returned. He mentioned also the appointment of Lieut.-Gen. Freyberg to the Governor-General-ship of New Zealand, and other matters regarding R.S.A. The following was the toast-list:—“Absent Comrades,” proposed by Mr. G. E. English (Runanga). “Prisoners of War,” proposed by Mr. Tom Harper, responded to by Fit. Lt. Meagher. “2nd. N.Z.E.F.,” proposed by Mr. J. W. Fairman, and responded ’to by Messrs. Douglas and Finch; “R.5.A.,” proposed by Mi'. R. Hunt, and responded to by Messrs. J. Smith and J. Fairman. “Nursing Services,” pronosed by Mr. Warwick, responded to by Messrs. G. Roberts and E. Wick. During the evening items were contributed by Messrs. R. Summerville, Warwick, English and Williams.
