HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, Sept. 18. It is reported that the sale of one of the leading hotels here is about to be completed. A civic reception was last evening accorded at the Soldiers’ Hall to men who recently have returned after serving overseas with the forces, there being a good attendance of the public. Messrs A. R. Elcock (Mayor), R. J. Bradley (County Chairman), and W. M. Fraser (R.S.A.) spoke for the residents, and Sergeant W. Boyd replied for the men. Concert items and a dance rounded off an enjoyable gathering. Whitebait have been running in the Totara River near Ross since the week-end, 3801bs having been caught on Saturday, more on Sunday and 6501bs on Monday. All went to the Christchurch market. On the Hokitika River there were nearly a hundred fishing on Sunday afternoon, there being some good catches, including a couple of kerosene by one man, bringing him over £l5? The price here fell last evening to 3s per nint last evening, but holds up well in Christchurch, where most of the catches are going, though some small lots have been sent to Wellington. Large quantities are now exoected from the Harihari, Mahitahi and Paringa Rivers and with the present runs a good season is anticipated. If the runs continue the canning factory here will . make a start.

Captain J. Reeves, master of the m.v. Kohu, and formerly of the Gael, is here on holiday leave with his wife and familv. Last week his daughter, Miss J’acqueline Reeves was married at Hokitika, prior to which she . was the recipient of a presentation from St. Mary’s Basketball Club of which she was an active member. Next month, in addition to- the Greymouth Operatic Club’s presentation here of “The Country Girl,” the local Revue Company is putting on “Atomic Moments,” for which _ rehearsals are proceeding enthusiasti■On Friday a junior football team arrives here from Westport and will on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. play a Westland team at Cass Square,' the latter being as follows: K. Wallace; Young, R. Stoop, Manera; R. Breeze, N. Lynch; O. Wildbore; Shivas, E. Rawlings, Stephens, Weiblitz, Upjohn, Davern, Duncan, Warren. Emergencies: Ellis, Parker, Shearer, Guigich. The Westland team will play m red and black jerseys. Mr S. Havill will act as manager of the local team, and Mr S. Moore of the .visiting team.
