The Inst com sc commenced on September 4. f The course is designed to mio returned servicemen the } ei o "'_ mental developments that have oc curred while they were overseas, and to stimulate their interest in proolems of government generally. lhe programme of lectures has accordingly been planned to provide a general survey of recent political, administrative and economic changes, and to forecast some of the problems that the Public Service, will be called upon to solve during the period of reconstruction. Lecturers have been drawn IL ’°™ both the Public Service and the staff of Victoria University College (including the Department of Political Science and Public Administration). Twenty-eight lectures are included in the course and each lecture is followed by general discussion. Part of each day is set aside as a reading period, books of public administration and allied subjects being provided from Victoria College library. In addition; visits are paid to Parliament and to selected Government departments.

Over 250 ex-servicemen have applied to take the course and it is expected that further applications will be received as demobilisation proceeds. The first forty selected came from a wide range of departments and from all parts of New Zealand. Gne of the important factors governing the selection of each group will be the length of service overseas. The Public Service Commissioner expressed his deep appreciation of the assistance that was being given by the Principal and teaching staff of Victoria University College.
