REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON, August 14 Captain Porter, who recently returned after being a prisoner ot war, is visiting his brother, Mr. W. G. Porter, Reefton. Private H. Derrick, formerly ot Reefton, is looking up old friends. He recently returned from overseas. Private L. Burrows, who has returned from overseas is staying with his sister Mrs. Lynch. After a lengthy public meeting at Reefton to consider a programme to mark V-J Day the following was decided on: There will be a church service following the official ringing of bells and a civic ceremony at the County Chambers half an hour later when there will be selections by the band and addresses by the County chairman (Mr. C. Coxall) and a, representative of the Returned Services’ Association (Mr. W. G. Porter). There will also be a children’s matinee at the picture theatre when ice creams will be given out. In the evening a social and dance will be held in the gymnasium hall. On the second day, at one p.m. a prc-cession headed by the R.S.A. will leave the County Chambers for the Reefton racecourse where sports, football, etc., will be held. At 7.30 p.m. a bonfire will be lit at Strand Domain under the charge of the Fire Brigade. This will be followed by a community sing. The County chairman (Mr. Coxall) presided at the meeting which elected the following committee to finalise arrangements: Messrs W. Porter, .J. Cutbush, J. Crossman. A. Stanley, A. Vogt, Rev. Leaning, V. Newcombe, S. Robinson, Rev. Father Bourke, F. Boot, J. Dellaca, T. Dellaca, K. Patterson, M. Panckhurst, Misses Archer, O’Malley, Morris; Mesdames Panckhurst, Morgan, Cox,fill, Yellowldes and Discaciati.
