HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, August 14. The death occurred at the Westland Hospital on August 12 of Monica Mary, the second daughter of Mr and Mrs William Wilson, •of South Revell Street, Hokitika. She was a native of Bruce Bay, South Westland, and 15 years of age. S-he had been ailing for some weeks. The funeral took place at the Hokitika Cemetery from All Saints’ Church this afternoon. Mr Stephens,, chairman _ of the peace celebrations committee, presided at the meeting of the committee held in the County Chambers on Monday evening. There was a large attendance. The Mayor (Mr. A. R. Elcock) and the County Chairman (Mr. R. J. Bradley) were among those present. The Mayor announced that if the announcement came through in the morning, a short thanksgiving service would be held at the Library steps at 2 p.m. If the news came through during the night, the thanksgiving service would be held at the Library steps at 11 a.m. the following day. On the first day the celebrations would include a grand performance from the well at the corner of Revell and Weld Streets. Folk dancing and revels would assure all a very happy time. A bonfire would be lit on the beach, and this would be a highlight of the proceedings. On the second day, a monster procession would be organisde. The procession would be marshalled at North Revell Street and would commence from No. 2 Fire Station and proceed via Revell, Hamilton, and Sewell Streets', past the Clock Tower, into Fitzherbert Street, thence Jay way of Hampden Street, down Sale Street into Weld Street, and into Cass Square. The whole procession woykl then parade around Cass Souare At the Square a special marque ww-’id cater for all the children. Free ice creams and cool drinks would be dispensed to town vendors, who would be asked co put up stalls to sell to the public. Events at the Square would include a special display by the Fire Brigade, side shows, burlesque football match, and special items and displays by the Revue Society. The meeting decided that the procession would assemble at 1.30 and start off at two o’clock, the revels at Cass Square to start at 2.30 p.m. Mi’s Salvingy was asked to organise the ladies to conduct thet ice-cream stall, and it was decided to ask the local carpenters to assist in building the marque. It was stated that a novelty event at the Square would be the challenge tug-o’-war between the Mayor and Councillors and’ their staff. The Mayor said the Council would be pleased to pull things off with the County Council also. The committee decided that any surplus funds would be handed to the Patriotic Committee, of the town and country to be treated to a free picture show on the Wednesday following the celebrations. The pictures are to be on at both town theatres, and ice-creams are to be provided for each child attending. The following committees were set up to complete arrangements: Procession: Messrs L. S. Ross, J. Preston, and R. Stevenson. Night Revels: Messrs R. Guthrie, C. B. Ross, C. Preston, R. Guthrie, Pj. Stevenson, L. L. Ross and G. Raine. Side Shows and Fun Alley, Messrs H. Kortegast, H. Wells and J. Richards. Pictures: E. W. Heenan to arrange with local picture company. Ice Creams and Drinks: Mrs. Salvingy and ladies’ committee. F’ootball Burlesque Match: Rugby Union (Mr. Havill, convenor). All children attending the peace celebrations in fancy costume are to be givsn a free ticket to a local picture show. The chairman intimated i<; members that the surplus from the last celebrations was just over £33. The meeting decided to open a subscription list at the “Guardian,” Office to receive advance- donations towards defraying the cost of the. celebrations and also to take up a collection on the square, on V-J Day.
