BACON AWARD

ROTOMANU SUCCESS The Supervisor of the Canterbury District Pig Council’s recent bacon competition, .Mr. H. W. Mclntosh, advises of a correction in the award announcement. Last week the Council announced that Mr. Ryan of Rotomanu won the N.Z. Co-op. Pig Marketing Association Silver Rose Bowl. When double checking the figures later it was found that the cup was actually won by Mr. Geo. Cowan of Rotomanu. To win the P.M.A. Rose Bowl, points are allotted for numbers in the litter, growth rate, and carcase quality. The pig Mr. Ryan exhibited which gained 82 points secured 44 points out of 50 for farm points, while his entry (securing 77 points for carcase) secured the possible oi 50. The error was made by giving in first instance 50 farm point to the pig gaining 82 points for Carcase, instead of the 44 as was the case. Mr. Cowan’s pig secured 79 points for carcase quality and 50 for farm points, making a total of 129 points with Mr. Ryan’s exhibit again a close second with 127 points. Mr. Mclntosh states: The T. H. Green and Co. Challenge Cup for the best baconer in the show was won by Mr, D. J. Aker of Orari, South Canterbury, with 83 points out of a possible of 100. One of Mr. Ryan’s entries secured second place with 82. Another of Mr. Ryan s entries gained 77 points. Mr. Ryan.s performance was a great credit to him, and it will be seen that he narrowly missed winning both of these valuable trophies. It should interest West Coast farmers to know however, that Mr. Ryan’s exhibit which gained 82 points secured higher marks than the winners in the Bacon Competition held in Auckland a few weeks ago when 2,076 pigs competed. The same judge attended both competitions. This is the third year in succession that a jcoveted trophy has gone to Rotomanu, which has the best Berkshire pigs in New Zealand. „ , ~ . The pigs 'at Messrs Ryan s, Hodgkinson’s and Cowan’s are all f£° m the original sow sent over to their pig club seven years ago and still producing the very best. The supervisor will shortly visit the West Coast to present the trophy and certificates to the successful exhibitors.
