RESEARCH ON COAST
Committee Set Up After considering a letter, received from the Director of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Dr. E. Marsden), the Council of the Westland District Progress League, at its meeting last evening, decided to set up a committee representative of all interests in the districts to prepare a programme of work which it was considered should be carried out in the district. This will be submitted to the Department. In his letter, Dr. Marsden said that some time ago he had been told of some of the desires of the League. “Since that time.” he continued, “we hav prepared various reports on coal resources and have started some work on the utilisation of sawdust. I take it that what is really needea is a thorough survey, of your soils and land utilisation possibilities. I have discussed this „ matter with Professor Hudson, of' Lincoln College, who would be glad to co-operate. He finds his staff very involved in the extra training required in connection with, rehabilitation. We shall shortly be preparing our plans for next year's work, and I should be glad to receive from you a list of the jobs which your organisation considers urgent.” The chairman (Mr W. D. Taylor) said that the matter might develop into one of some importance, as the approach had come from Dr. Marsden himself. He suggested that a committee be set up to draft a programme for submission to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. This suggestion was adopted, and the following were appointed a committee: Messrs F. A. Kitchingham (Mayor of Greymouth), W. H. G. Stewart (Mayor of Kumara). A. R. Elcock (Mayor of Hokitika), M. Wallace (a member of the Westland County Council), H. Beckett (President, West Coast Province, N.Z. Farmers’ Union), C. Hunter (Mmes Department), J. S. Robertson (representing the timber industry), F F. Boustridge (a member ot the Westland Catchment Board), G. D. L J. Wicks, J. Saunders, and W. D.
