A Press Association message states that Archbishop O’Shea, of Wellington, will leave to-day. for Apia, to take part in the Episcopal Jubilee celebrations of the Right Rev. J. Darnand, Vicar Apostolic of Samoa, whom he consecrated 25 years ago. LieutenantColonel (Monsignor) Connolly will accompany the Archbishop, and they will afterwards visit Catholic Chaplins, and New Zealand Air Force personnel in the Pacific.

The Moscow radio reports that M. Stalin has been promoted to be Generalissimo, by order of the Supreme Soviet. The Presidium of the Soviet created the title of Generalissimo by a decree, and then issued a statement that the title would be conferred for exceptional and outstanding service to the State in the leadership of all the Armed Forces during the war.

Lance-Corporal Owen George O’Connor, of the Australian Imperial Forces, who has been cited for gallantry in Southern Bougainville Island, is a native of Greymouth. He is the’ only son of Mr George O’Connor, and a grand-son of Mrs M. O’Connor, Preston Road. The report of Corporal O’Connor’s gallantry stated: “The 20*year-old Australian, LanceCorporal Owen George O’Connor, has been cited for gallantry in Southern Bougainville Island, in the Solomons. 1 Lance-Corporal O’Connor stood guard over a wounded man, when three Japanese attacked with fixed bayonets. O’Connor killed them all, and then, under fire, carried the wounded man to safety. He returned to save a second wounded comrade, and he gave covering fire so that a third wounded man could escape; and finally he rescued a fourth man. who was pinned down by enemy fire. LanceCorporal O’Connor was second in command of a nine-man patrol, whose task was to locate suspected Japanese headquarters.”

Labour's candidate for the forthcoming by-election at Dunedin North, Mr. Robert Walls, J.P., of Dunedin, is a prominent business man, and is well known for his activities in local body affairs. Since 1938 he has been a member not only of the Dunedin City Council, but also for the Otago Harbour Board and the Otago Hospital Board. In the municipal elections last year he topped the poll for the City Council and the Harbour Board. Mr. Walls is a trustee of the Dunedin Savings Bank, and in 1944 was president, a position carrying with it at that time the chairmanship of the National Savings Committee. He is also a member of the Otago Land Sales Committee and the Dunedin District Health Camp Committee,, a Vice-President of the Otago High School BOys’ Cricket Club, and has been for many years a member of the Royal Dunedin Male Choir a nd the Dunedin Orphans’ Club. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and was Master of Lodge Dunedin 931 in 1917-18. He was subsequently appointed Deputy-District Grand Master of Otago and Southland. Mr. Walls was born in Dunedin and educated at the High Street and Union Street Schools, and served an apprenticeship to the cabinet-making trade, after which he and the late Mr. John McCracken took over the piano repairing and tuning business. He was for a time owner of the broadcast-' ing station 4ZM, which was eventually taken over by the Government.
