LEAGUE FOOTBALL

WEEK-END GAMES. The West Coast Rugby League . competitions wore continued yesterday in. fine, but dull weather. In | all grades the championship lounds were commenced, and interest at Wingham Park, where there was a good attendance, centred around the Marir.t-Kohinoor game, as'in the oneround competition Marist were considered lucky to* win by la points to 11. The Kohinoor team put up a i good showing until half-way through the second spell, when Marist rattled on 15 points in ten minutes. In the Marist team, Mann, at full-back, was the best back on the field and revealed his old dash. Teen and Sweetman were solid, but the five-eighths did not impress at any part. Lou, Watson and Wallace were the pick of the Marist forwards. In the Kohinoor forwards, Glynn, Dolehquy and Dunn played outstanding games. J. and D. Mulqueen, Scoones and Butler were the pick of the backs. MARIST DEFEAT KOHINOOR. The teams lined out as follows. Kohinoor: D. Mulqueen, T. Butler, N. McGuire, S. Scoones, E. Patterson, T. McKenzie, J. Mulqueen, W. Glynn, T. Mears, W. Todd, L. Dolhequy, R. Wesley and W. Dunn. Marist: M. Mann, C. Teen, L. Dargan, L. Dunn, F. Willis, J. Mundy, L. Sweetman, P. Malone, D. Wallace, D. Watson, W. Mundy, P'. Coll and F. Malloy. Kohinoor won the toss and pressed T. McKenzie made a good kick from the 25, and just missed. Marist pressed and there was a good save by D. Mulqueen. Kohinoors secured an advantage in the scrums. Teen made a hard attack, but was forced down by D. Mulqueen. Kohinooi again pressed. Marist reversed the attack, but the situation was saved by Patterson. Coll took the kick. McKenzie made a good tackle at Dargin. A passing back movement by Kohinoor was stopped by Dunn. From a scrum movement J. Mulqueen received a pass to score. The kick missed. Kohinoor 3; Marist 0. Marist attacked and were awarded a penalty. The kick', taken by Cell, missed. Off-side play gave Marist a free kick and Coll sent over. Marist 5; Kohinoor 3. Kohinoor made a forward scrum rush, but the ball was picked up by Mundy, who nearly went over, J. Mulqueen making a good save. McKenzie made a forward pass and Marist had a free kick. Mann made a good run, but was well tackled by D. .Mulqueen. Half-time came with Kohinoor on the attack. Marist 5; Kohinoor 3. E. Patterson, who took the Held again after some years, was playing an outstanding game. Marist backs at this stage were pressing, but the Kohinoor backs played.a good defensive game. Kohinoor kicked oft. Marist had a free kick—a good line kick. Kohinoor pressed, but Marist secured and made a good run. After some handling, Dargan scored under the posts. Coll converted. Marist 10; Kohinoor 3. A penalty kick awarded to Kohinoor was taken by T. McKenzie. Marist made a good run, but Watson was brought down right on the line, by a good tackle from Butler. The game at this stage was getting exciting, bringing the crowd to l heir toes. Marist were attacking hard. Wallace picked up from the loose to score. Coll missed the kick. Marist 13; Kohinoor 3. McGuire secured, made a good run of 25 yards and passed to Dunn, who put a kick to the corner flag. From a loose scrum, Dunn went over. Marist 13; Kohinoor 6. Marist attacked, Mann passing to Mundy, who was unlucky not to score. Patterson made a good save for Kohinoor. Kohinoor then reversed the play and were unlucky not to score, Mann bringing Butler down in a good tackle. Kohinoor pressed again and Scoones was unlucky not to go over. Marist, led by Teen, reversed the play, taking the. ball at the toe the whole length of the field, for Malone to go over. Coll converted. Marist 18; Kohinoor 6. Marist came away from a loose scrum and S-weetman went over. I Marist 21; Kohinoor 6. Kohinoois attacked again but a serum kick was ordered and from a good movement Mundy scored in the corner. Coll missed the kick. Marist 24; Kohinoor 6. Marist scored again after another good run, Coll going over under the posts. Coll converted. Marist 29; Kohinoor 6. Marist scored again, shortly afterwards, Willis going oyer this time, and the game ended:-Marist 32; Kohinoor 6. Mr. B. McGirr was the referee. RUNANGA 43, BRUNNER 8. In the senior game played at Brunner, Runanga defeated the home team by 43 points to 8. A feature of the .game was the fine display by the Runanga backs, the Forrest brothers., who between them, scored seve ntries, and Soster being outstanding. Dalzell and K. Newton played well in the forwards. Outstanding Brunner players were Dixon, Dando, Williams and Ross. Mr. P. .Sweetman was referee. BLACKBALL 10—NGAHERE 9 At Blackball the home defeated Ngahere by one point in what was generally reckoned to be the best game so far seen this season. The ground was in good order and there was a good attendance of the public. Early in the game A. Howden kicked a penalty goal and a few minutes later kicked another, giving Ngahere the lead 4—o. Later in the first half K. Mountford scored and C, Mountford converted, half time sounding with the score 5—4 in Blackball’s favour. Early in the second half Parker scored for Ngahere and C. Mcßride scored for Blackball. C. Mountford converting. The final points were scored by Howden, who kicked his third penalty goal of the game to bring the final score 'to Blackball 10—Ngahere 9. Among the Blackball backs Kirk and the Mountford brothers shone, while Aynslcy, Mcßride, and K. Mountford were the best of the forwards. Mulcare, Stenhousc, and A. Gibson were best of the Ngahere . backs, and outstanding forwards were Dunn, Howden, and F. Gibson. Mr. J. Griffin was referee. LOWER GRADES In the junior games Blackball defeated Brunner at Blackball, 23—5, (referee, Mr. W. Allen); Runanga defeated Marist at Wingham Park, 18—6 (referee, Mr. J. Quinn); and Kumara defeated Kohinoor at Kumara, 30 —0 referee (Mr. H. Bassett). Runanga thirds defeated Brunner thirds at Bruner, 13—10 (referee, Mr. W. Kerr). . . In the fourth grade games defeated Runanga at Wingham tain, s—o (referee, Mr. W. P. Moore); amt Blackball defeated Kohinoor at Blackball. 15—3 (referee, Mr. A. Kennedy). .
