When the fire bell sounded the Fire Brigade was quickly on tire scene with their reel and carriage. Two leads of hose were run out from the Tui Street corner and two strong jets of water were soon pouring into the building, but the fire had such a firm hold that nothing could be saved. The easterly breeze kept the fire away from the dental clinic and school which are both a fair distance away. The building, although about 60 years old, had been kept in fair repair inside and out by the Education Board and its destruction is a distinct los to the community.
